Brandwells Construction was first registered as Brandwells Ltd on 9th April 1973 by Andy Dowden, the current Executive Chairman, and his then senior partner, Joe Whitter. The business was renamed Brandwells Construction Co Ltd before it commenced trading. Andy and Joe had previously worked together at Avonmouth Plant & Construction Co. Ltd (APC) and later at Durnfords Construction Ltd (Durnfords), based in central Bristol. After starting their own business, they secured early contracts with English and Continental Homes Ltd, Bovis Homes Ltd and United Bristol Hospitals Trust (UBHT). Tragically, Joe passed away in 1975, leaving Andy in sole charge. With the support of Arthur East, who had joined the Company as Secretary from Durnfords, the Company survived this major setback. John Stafford, the son of one of Joe’s close friends, joined the company and is still a Director and Shareholder today. In the 1980s, the company expanded to include South West Decorating Services Ltd (SWDS) to undertake decorating work for UBHT and Bristol City Council. In 1986, Brandwells Construction moved to its current freehold office and yard at Church Lane, St. George. The company has continued to grow, adding new clients and concentrating more on groundwork. Notable projects include the South Liberty Trading Estate for M P Kent and the Urban Renewal project at Baltic Wharf, Cumberland Road, Bristol. Brandwells Construction has established itself as one of the foremost groundworks contractors in the South West, with preferred contractor status with many major housing developers. In 2022, the company opened a South West Regional office at Alphington, Exeter, and achieved a record turnover of over £62 million.
