Company History Northumbrian Roads was born in 1989, when founder John Lynch decided to start his own business from his home in Hexham, Northumberland. He and his business partner George Barton, with whom he had worked previously, soon gained a reputation for being a friendly, reliable and professional outfit. Both men each introduced their two sons to the business at an early age (under 18) and all of them, Sean and Chris Lynch, Stephen and David Barton have been with the company ever since and remain involved in key positions today. In 1990, they were joined by Chris Dancer who brought further engineering experience to the board to enable the business to grow into a wider marketplace. During the early 1990's the company operated from a pair of portakabins situated on a plot of land in Low Prudhoe Industrial Estate. Today, the same site now hosts our registered business address which sites a purpose built office, workshop facility and lorry park. Steady growth during the 1990's saw Northumbrian Roads develop its fleet of plant and machinery with the workforce growing from the original 7 to 35 employees. Year 2000 saw the promotion of Chris Dancer to Managing Director, allowing John Lynch to take a step back and begin planning his retirement. However, sadly after a 15 month battle with illness John passed away in March 2005 sending shock waves through the company. This, together with the retirement of George Barton in March 2004 meant that the running of the company was to continue under the next generation of Lynchs and Bartons assisting Chris Dancer. In more recent years, Northumbrian Roads growth has been progressive, with the addition of some more experienced managers, has helped the business broaden its capabilities into road planing, groundworks, own haulage, material production and recycled aggregates to become a more self sufficient outfit. Today, as Northumbrian Roads heads towards its 30th year, the company maintains a very strong North East presence in the market place. It has grown to a circa. £11 million turnover business employing over 75 people. It very much retains a family feel with its independent status as many family ties run through the company alongside numerous long serving loyal employees.
