  • John Carr (Liverpool) Ltd
    4.4
    10 - 12 Grundy Street, Liverpool, L5 9SG, GB

John Carr (Liverpool) Limited is a family-run business with over four generations of experience. Founded around 1896 by John Carr, the company has been continuously operated by his descendants. In 1939, it was officially incorporated, specializing in hauling lump lime, granite, and limestone from North Wales, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire. After World War II, the business expanded during a period of economic growth. During the 1950s, the increasing demand for traditional white and black ash mortar led to the need for new premises. Sand was manually shoveled from Crosby shoreline onto wagons and transported to the factory at Village Street, where it was manually shoveled into mortar mills for the production of lime sand mortar. Further expansion occurred in the late 1950s to accommodate more mortar mills, loading shovels, and larger delivery vehicles. In the early 1970s, a state-of-the-art lime plant was commissioned, slaking ground quick lime from Buxton to produce and store liquid lime putty for lime sand mortar production. This operation continues today. The demand for skipped deliveries of lime sand mortar and a new range of colors led to the development of over 150 standard mortar shades. The 1980s saw the introduction of ready-to-use mortars and ready-mixed sand and cement floor screeds, offering a more convenient and consistent building solution. Today, the company is run by two of John Carr's grandsons and a great-grandson, continuing the family tradition while looking towards the future.
